I love to be surrounded by colour, it energizes me and lifts my mood. Bold use of colour is my signature style, it is what I am known best for.  Your choice of colour can totally change the look and feel of a room and there are so many ways to introduce it, but surely, we must start with the actual kitchen itself? I love how the dark midnight blue is the perfect foil for my signature bright colours to bounce off. Colourful kitchens are a fast emerging trend and I predict we will see plenty more of these bright mood enhancing spaces following lockdown.

Style is personal, some people favour clean simple lines, others believe in showing everything off.  In a world where all objects can be beautiful as well as functional why not make your kitchenalia a design choice? Having all my things on show brings me so much joy, I am a collector, a magpie who likes to display her collections; they might be things that I use daily, things I love and want to see, or simply things which make me smile or evoke a fond memory. Every item must earn its place in my kitchen, long gone are the days of white appliances, these now come in every colour and finish to suit all styles and budgets. Why have a boring coffee machine when you can have a candy pink one, be bold with your choices, you wont regret it.

My design Process.

Where should we start when planning a room? A kitchen should be tackled much the same way as any other room. For me inspiration can come from many places, it might start with a specific object or a colour.

When asked to style Magnet’s Luna Midnight kitchen, the deep midnight blue shade was my starting point and as such a fantastic neutral, there are so many colours that would work with it to make it pop and sing. Blush pink is popular right now; I knew there would be a great choice of items to use so I chose that as my main accent colour.

I think that we have established I’m firmly in the maximalist camp, always using lots of layers and texture to create interest. To elevate the place settings, I used pink patterned crockery, textiles and copper cutlery, adding a few blue items to break it up and tie it in with the main colour of the kitchen. I’m not a fan of things matching too much, I like to curate my dinnerware from many different sources, especially charity shops. I cannot resist a patterned plate, sometimes they are just too pretty to put away and cry out to be displayed on a wall. I also made a feature of storage by using glass jars to store pretty party ring biscuits and neon candles.

Candlelight and plants add further layers of interest. Plants and natural materials are good to have around you; they are calming and soothing as well as being on trend right now. A lit candle at the dinner table adds a sophisticated air – use candle holders of different heights and gather them together to create a focal point.

Artwork is particularly important. It has got to be beautiful as well as meaning something, to be a conversation point. I like to mix up traditional and modern. An oversized piece will add impact, in here I used a food colour chart which looks super cool and is funny to read. As I mentioned earlier, I like to display plates on the wall and think you can’t go wrong with a fun neon sign.

All of those elements come together to make my ideal space, it’s just a little insight into how I added my style to this fab Magnet Kitchen. My top tip is be bold in your choices to create a space that reflects your personality, choose items that bring you joy and make your heart sing and you won’t go far wrong.
